Scott Synder and Greg Capullo's Batman has been a powerhouse of story telling for the New 52 line of DC Comics and is easily one of the highest selling comics since it debuted in 2011. For this reason, these two creators have earned DC trust when it comes to pushing our beloved characters to the physical, spiritual and mental edge. Now they seem to be creating a new version of the Dark Knight seen in the two pictures below.
The top image shows that it is still very much the dirty rainy Gotham city that we know and love today but there are some elements to this art that I find jarring. One: there is a smoking gun in the picture. We all know that Batman has a strict no gun policy so what does it presence say about this Batman? Perhaps it's just a stun gun? Or maybe it shoots on an EMP like in The Dark Knight Rises? If it is a gun used to cause mortal harm then perhaps it's not Bruce Wayne under there? Perhaps this is the result of current Endgame arc or a result of the upcoming Convergence event? Two: The ears. What the hell is going on with the ears? The robot looks more like a giant mechanical bunny that a bat! The color combination of the suit makes me think Bugs Bunny finally snapped and is out looking for Elmer Fudd.
This design is disappointing given the armor designed and used in previous arcs such as Death of the Family and Endgame. If they were to go with any of those pervious versions I'd be more excited. However, like DC I feel as though Snyder and Capullo have earned my trust over these past five years with constant and consistent art and storytelling. I'm willing to give Bugs a chance...
This year's Free Comic Book Day, DC will be providing an 8 page preview of this robotic Dark Knight in action.
