KTK-KTK-KTK was balanced, fun, and you could do some really powerful stuff (like make a five color deck that could win an 8-4), but there were elements from the set that were missing, and the addition of fate reforged didn't fix the problem. The problem in my opinion being that there was just no cheap/efficient removal. Cards like Throttle and Reach of Shadows were great at what they did, but at 5 mana if you were falling behind, you were staying behind.
ENTER DRAGONS OF TARKIR
We finally have some cheap removal again! With the addition of cards like Ultimate Price and Pacifism (as well as several other low cost removal spells) limited players finally have the ability to kill their opponent's bombs when they're behind, or at the very least without tapping out. Even though I am super excited to see some cheap and efficient removal spells being printed, I'm even more excited for the reason why they were printed..
Dragons, lots of dragons, powerful powerful dragons.
I lost count but there are at least 20 dragons in this set, and the worst of them are still insanely powerful threats. In a set this powerful there needs to be powerful ways to answer the threats, and I'm pretty sure that's why wizards saved all the good removal for this set. In Khans limited there were definitely hard to deal with bombs, but the format was slower for the most part and you could usually have a decent board state by the time your opponent flipped over their Sagu Mauler. Fate Reforged added even more bombs, but no comparable removal spells, and many people felt that the format became "pick your first bomb, draw your bomb, win".
Now that we have two pack packs of Dragons and one pack of Fate, there are going to be a lot bombs hitting the field, but at least we finally have the answers. I'm not sure what to expect of this set as far as limited goes, and I'm going to miss casting Dead Drop against my opponents, but Dragons of Tarkir seems like it's going to be a really fun set. At the very least, there be dragons.
