'Dragons of Tarkir' is finally out in the wild and it's time to start cracking some packs and doing some drafts! This week I'm doing a pack 1 pick 1 for the new draft format of DTK-DTK-FRF. I'm no LSV or Brian Kibler, but I like me some drafts so if you're looking for a fun semi-critical look at a booster draft hop on in!
Alright so lets start with the commons. In this pack I had:
So out of these commons only three stand out to me as possible first picks, those being Silumgar Butcher, Twin Bolt, and Anticipate. The butcher seems good because it can serve as both a body on the ground, and with its -3/-3 exploit ability it can also serve as a removal spell for one of your opponents creatures. Anticipate is a constructed all-star and seems like a great role player in blue limited decks, the ability to draw a card and shape your draws is a really powerful effect. Lastly Twin Bolt seems like a nice little removal spell against an aggressive strategy trying to flood the board with tokens or small creatures, but it's not too exciting.
Now the Uncommons:
Deadly Wandering doesn't excite me at all, and I can't imagine such an expensive enchantment with such a narrow effect seeing much play if at all. Dragon Hunter is the kind of card I love. I'm a white weenie guy at heart and when I see a 2/1 for 1 that has an upside I get excited. I think this card could see some constructed play if the BW warriors deck ends up being a thing. For limited though I think this will be a good role player in the warriors deck, but not necessarily first pick worthy. Now breezedancer, although fairly expensive it is a powerful card. A 4/4 flying for 6 is a playable card in some decks, but with the prowess-esque ability this card can close out games really fast if left on the board. Now picking this card will somewhat lock you into two colors early on, but at the moment this is looking like my pick.
And the rare:
Now this card seems powerful, it's a big body that comes down and immedietly impacts the board, but seven mana seems like a lot. I think if this card cost 6, or if it was a 5/6 it would be a lot more appealing. At 4/5 it's not going to win a lot of fights, and coming down on turn 7 your opponent could very easily have much bigger threats on the board. If it does fight and kill an opponents creature though it does become a much scarier 6/7, but ultimate price is a card again and I just think it's not that great.
So with this pack it's between the Regent and Breezedancer, and I'm personally going to take the Breezedancer. I think UW is a powerful combination to be in, and as the curve topper in the semi-aggressive UW decks this seems like a good card to grab.
What would you guys pick? Do you think I'm a damn fool for passing the Regent? Let me know and thanks for reading!
