Recently, photos of Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Krysten Ritter Jessica Jones on set riding a motorcycle have leaked on the internet. When the news came out on who they cast as two of my favorite characters, I was less than excited about the casting. But I have all be wrong before when it comes to bad casting and I am a believer that Ben Affleck is going to make a phenomenal Batman.
Krysten Ritter is a better than average actor. I wouldn't call her great, but I have never seen her put on a bad performance. She did a great job in Breaking Bad as Jesse's girl (try getting that song out of your head now) playing a recovering and then relapsing junky and she was also good in "She's out of your league"(Yeah, I saw that too, don't judge me). Does she look like Jessica Jones? No. Not at all. She doesn't seem to physically look like her. Then again, no one is going to look completely like who they are playing if you can put on a performance that will make you forget about the look.
I also may be a bit bias since I was rooting for Ali Larter to play Jessica Jones. I thought she would have been perfect. She played a great bitch in "Heroes" and physically looks like Jessica Jones. She doesn't have the start power like Krysten Ritter has since she was in "Breaking Bad", but I feel that Larter could play the role better than Ritter.
My biggest gripe is with Mike Colter as Luke Cage. While I just said that the look shouldn't matter much, it's a bit different when the guy you're playing is supposed to be one of the toughest men in the Marvel Universe. A man that even made Wolverine hesitate. I don't look at Mike Colter and think "He's a bad mother (shuy yo' mouth). He may be a good actor, but he is not Luke Cage. Luke Cage doesn't have to be three hundred pounds, but he has to look intimidating. No disrespect to Mike Colter, but he doesn't look like he strikes fear in the hearts of anyone. His performances have not been the greatest which leaves me worried that the Luke Cage series isn't going to be what it could be.
While everyone was hoping for Terry Crews to play Power Man, my pick was Billy Brown. Billy Brown looks like someone who'd get in Dr. Doom's face or tell Iron Man off because he doesn't agree with him. He looks like a tough guy and he has played a tough smart guy in "Dexter" and now in "How to get Away with Murder". Terry Crews may have the build, but because he has played so many goofy roles it may be a bit hard for people to believe he could play Luke Cage.
Last, and certainly not least, we have David Tennant as Purple Man. Now, I don't know much about him but he does look like Killgrave. He has a slender and creepy look to him that gives he hope that he'll do a good job. The picture of him on scene in the costume also helped my decision.
Long story made longer, I am ranting like a nerd (as I tend to do) and having low expectations may be a good thing when the show comes out. I am a giant fan of 2004 and on Luke Cage and since Marvel has done a great job picking their actors I should have more faith. I could be wrong and if and when I am, I will be right here writing an apology letter to Mike Colter and Krysten Ritter for ever doubting them.
