This past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con Warner Brothers went trailer crazy. We got a new full length Batman V Superman trailer and our first real look at Suicide Squad. I'm one of the people who thought both of these trailers looked great, and if you want to hear me defend that opinion check out this week's episode of Wednesday. I didn't write this post to defend the trailers or the movies that they are teasing, but instead I'm going to defend Jared Leto's Joker which has been getting a lot of shit lately.
To start off I'm going to say what I always say in these kinds of arguments, the movie isn't out yet. I know it's really easy to jump on the hate train, especially for us nerds, but as I get older I've started seeing things differently. The hate train, although fun sometimes, is a waste of time and effort. Bitching about the representation of a fictional character online isn't going to make a multi-million dollar movie stop production so you can come on board and show them how it should be done. That time and effort could be spent producing fun and exciting content, or watching movies, or reading comics!
If you are still a passenger on the hate train and my peace and love on the internet approach didn't change your outlook let me try my next argument, the Joker is constantly being reinvented and he will be again after this franchise runs it's course. People always use the argument "IT'S NOT LIKE THE COMICS" or "THE JOKER DOESN'T LOOK THAT WAY", but those are incredibly weak arguments when talking about a character who looks different every time a new penciler draws him. The only real constant with the Joker is white skin, green hair, and a purple jacket, all of which Leto has covered.
BUT THE JOKER DOESN'T HAVE TATTOOS.
Sure those are way cooler tattoos than Leto's, but hey you can't win 'em all.
What I'm really trying to get at with this rant is that I think people should hold off on their judgement until we get the movie. If the movie sucks I will gladly voice my opinion on it, but what if it doesn't? I also like seeing how different artists interpret different characters. One of the reasons Secret Wars is so successful is because people get to see all the different variations of their favorite characters. If this was just an else-world Joker story people would not care at all, and if you think about it that's all these movies really are anyway.
I mean look at Harley Quinn, she's a character that looks nothing like she does in the comic books, but no one cares. They clearly took inspiration for her from the Arkham games, which had it's fair share of internet hate when it came out, but after a while the world has accepted the look and even likes it.
So I say give the new Joker a chance, if it sucks we can hate it together in 2016.
